Why Should You Switch Up Your Workout To Keep Losing Weight

You might be dedicated enough to do the same exercise day in and day out, or you might have to convince yourself before each workout that it won’t be that bad. Wherever you fall in that spectrum, switching up your workouts can help you to keep losing weight.

Studies show that variety in your workouts might just be more effective. A 2014 study out of Skidmore College (originally published in The Journal of Applied Physiology) divided out-of-shape volunteers into three groups. The first group participated in either a resistance, interval, stretching (such as yoga or Pilates), or endurance training four days of each of the study’s weeks. The second did solely resistance training, while the third did no workouts. All three groups consumed 60 grams of whey protein daily.

At the end of 16 weeks, the first group showed greater health improvements over the other two groups, including body weight reduction and lower total and abdominal fat mass, waist circumference, and blood glucose, as well as an increase in lean body mass. 

The study’s author, Paul Arciero, explained, “It’s very difficult to just lift weights, or only do the treadmill or the elliptical machine and be healthy. Your exercise regimen needs to encompass as much of what makes you a fully integrated living person as possible.” Arciero continued, “It’s not about simply doing more exercise, it’s about doing the appropriate range of exercises and activities that most effectively promote health and fitness.” 

If that’s not enough reason, another study from The Journal of Obesity reported that participants that changed things up spent an additional 9 minutes working out, expending 56 more kcal per day than other participants. [3] In other words, when you incorporate variety, you’ll work out longer and burn more calories.
